What If All The Best Gym Equipment Landed At Your Doorstep?
Is it a bird, is it a plane? Wait, it's raining gym equipment. Treadmills, exercise bikes, a rowing machine?! This is probably a beginner gymmer’s dream, to have the best of the best, that too at home!
Take it all inside, make some space, because now you’re about to change your body forever. No, not really. You will soon find out that these machines follow a formula. They make you sweat, they make you use your body and they fatigue you. Okay, so what does going on a run do? Pretty much the same right?
This is not to put down these items, they are amazing at what they do, and definitely more efficient than having to go on a run. However, the point I aim to make is that at its core, they exist to make the user’s life a bit easier, add some convenience to their lives by using technology to do what other physical activity will do. This efficiency comes at a pretty hefty price tag though. In Pakistan’s economy, investing in a 1.5-2 lac treadmill, or 2-3.5 lac exercise bike, which is the common starting price I found, might be a bit much, especially for mistaken beginners who think they need this to achieve their goals.
Treadmills and exercise bikes are still a beneficial purchase for those who cannot take out time to go on a run, but fancy equipment like a rowing machine? Yes, it's great! But do you even need it for what you want to achieve? Unless you are aiming to specialise in endurance training and training for a specific sport, please trust me in the fact that besides the activity feeling cool and unique, there is no reason to invest in a rowing machine for your home.
My only real counter to this argument is when it comes to weightlifting. You simply cannot make progress by lifting the same weight again and again. When you start, yes you will see some very motivating changes in your body.
But as your strength increases, that weight you once thought was heavy will not feel so difficult to lift anymore. You will go from 8, to 10, to 15 reps. It sounds great in terms of progress, but realise that once you stop feeling challenged, your body will not grow. So the simple fact that the weight is not heavy anymore is a sign to increase your weights. Hence when we really talk about the best gym equipment and what you should actually invest in, it is either dumbbells with different weighted plates, barbells with different plates, or adjustable dumbbells.
Different plates give you different weights to challenge your muscles, giving you full authority to decide how heavy or how light you wanna go for exercises, and when you grow in strength you can stack more plates on, resulting in your exercises becoming as difficult as they were when you started, leading to progressive overload.
The most unique and useful item mentioned above are the adjustable dumbbells. They are a hidden gem of an investment, however they are definitely pricey and more expensive than regular dumbbells, but for good reason. You see, when you are able to get access to a pair of dumbbells that can offer you a large range of weights, all in one package, while saving you space, confusion and giving you years worth of usage, they should be considered as a purchase. To learn more about the benefits of adjustable dumbbells as an investment I have left a link below for your information.
This article simply exists to help beginners out there decide for themselves what they think they should purchase for their home to achieve their fitness goals, without making decisions they may regret or not get much out of. All things mentioned above are effective and proven to be the best at what they aim to do, it all comes down to how much you are willing to spend on things you simply have alternatives for, and if you value convenience over money. But I urge everyone to achieve what they can all on their own, with minimal spending, because the best piece of equipment you really have is your own body, and you usually do not need much more than that to grow.
Are adjustable dumbbells worth it?
